公路起点在印度小镇雷多，在缅甸密支那分成南北两线，南线经八莫、南坎至中国畹町；

“史迪威”不是别人，正是二战时的美国将军，约瑟夫·史迪威，也是当时中国战区参谋长，和蒋介石关系很糟糕；
但奇怪的是，这条公路原来叫中印公路，改名为“史迪威公路”，也是蒋介石的命令。因为这次改名，
让不少人误以为，美国将军特别会修路。但史迪威不是工程师，不懂任何技术，真正让这条路变成现实的，

滇缅公路最出名的惠通桥。
那是二战最激烈的时候，国民政府征调20万人，在云南边境修了滇缅公路，保证援华物资的公路通道。
--------------但1942年，日本占领缅甸，炸断了滇缅公路的通行，也切断了中国与外界唯一的联系。
史迪威当时建议，从印度到中国,再修建一条公路生命线,来运输美国援华物资，当年12月，公路动工。

由于缅甸被日军占领，很难测绘地形等信息，道路施工难度颇大。美国士兵提供技术，当地工人负责施工，
大家冒着暴雨的威胁，野兽的袭击、疟疾的肆虐，以及日军攻击的危险，在茂密的热带雨林中，徒手开辟出一条公路。

“中印公路”有很多别名，因为是中美双方合作，也被称为“华美路”。云南猴桥镇有位老人，名叫辛勇生，90多岁。
他十几岁的时候，沿着这条新修的公路，从缅甸往中国方向乞讨，最后在猴桥的山坡上“扎根”。
--------------------几十年来他一直有个习惯，喜欢张望村寨下的公路，蜿蜒曲折，郁郁葱葱。
这条当时极其简易的公路，带他走向了活路，也带走了他的父母，因为他们正死于“修路”。

想起童年的记忆，辛勇生记得的不多，只说那条路一直“开石、搬石块、敲石头”。
2年的艰苦施工，耗资1.5亿美元，1945年1月，公路正式通车。但1100名美军士兵和1000多当地工人为此牺牲。
